What is Dysphagia?

Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder which results in difficulty and/or discomfort when swallowing liquids, food, and/or saliva.

How long does the assessment take?

Once the scope is passed through the patient’s nasal cavity, the assessment in total takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

What can I expect during the assessment?

The Speech-Language Pathologist will provide food and liquid trials for the patient to consume while the scope is viewing the inside of a patients throat with a birds-eye view.

What is the overall goal of a FEES?

The goal of this assessment is to identify whether dysphagia is present, evaluate the safety of the patients swallow function, determine an appropriate and safe diet recommendation, and identify the primary impairment affecting the patients ability to swallow for treatment purposes.

Does FEES fall under consolidated billing?

Yes. FEES is a billable service under Consolidated Billing Part A for a Skilled Nursing Facility. You can use CPT code 92612.
